Seasiders Lead from Beginning to End
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team continued their hot play tonight beating Western New Mexico 108-92 in a game that the Seasiders led the whole way. The Seasiders finished with five scores in double figures, led by the big man and guard duo of Lucas Alves, 28 points, and Trenson Akana, 23 points. The Seasiders are now 3-0.
BYU–Hawaii jumped out to a 5-0 lead and stretched it to a fifteen point lead six minutes into the game. The Seasiders then learned the resiliency of the Mustangs as they worked themselves back into the game just four minutes later cutting the lead to two points. BYU–Hawaii went on a 16-2 run and closing the half with a nine point advantage 49-40.
In the second half the Seasiders had trouble closing out the Mustangs as the saw them continue to fight back. The Seasiders would stretch the lead and the Mustangs would get some timely shooting to bring them back into single digit striking range. At the midway point through the half the Seasiders were up by seven and finished strong. They went on a 14-5 run followed quickly by a 15-7 run finished by a resounding pass and dunk from Akana to Alves to bring the score to 101-82. The crowd jumped to their feet cheering the Seasiders to the win.
Alves finished with 28 points and 8 rebounds and Akana had 23 points, shooting 6-8 on three pointers. Nathan Sims added 17 points going 7-8 from the field, Tsung-Hsien “Jet” Chang added 13 points while Marques Whippy scored 10 points and led with 9 rebounds. J.R. Buensuceso dished out 12 assists and had 2 steals. The Seasiders shot 62% from the field for the game and 73% from three point land.
The Mustangs were led by D.J. Nicholas’ 22 points, 10 rebounds and Andy Sohlich’s 20 points.
BYU–Hawaii will gets some time off before they begin the Hoop ‘N Surf Tournament on December 17th against Washburn (KS) in Laie at 7:30 pm.
