Men's Basketball to Open with Defending Champions
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team will open the 2008-09 season tomorrow night with high expectations against the defending NCAA II national champions. The Seasiders, who made it to the “Sweet Sixteen” last season, will take on Winona State, a team that has won two of the last three NCAA II titles and finished second in between the two crowns, at 7:30 pm in the Cannon Activities Center in Laie.
BYU–Hawaii starts the year ranked 23rd in the NABC pre-season poll and 24th in the Division II Bulletin pre-season rankings. Additionally, the Seasiders were tabbed by the Pacific West Conference coaches as the pre-season pick to win the conference. Individually, junior forward Lucas Alves was picked as the PacWest pre-season Player of the Year and as one of the Division II Bulletin Super 16 Selections for the nation.
Winona State comes to Laie ranked eighth in the pre-season by the DII Bulletin and ninth by the NABC poll.
The two teams will meet again on Thursday in the Cannon Center at 7:30 pm. Both games will be carried locally on AM1130 and on Oceanic Digital Cable channel 882.
