Seasiders Complete Exhibition Season with Win
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team defeated Hawaii Select tonight. 81-65, in an exhibition game in Laie. The Seasiders led by just four points, 37-33, at the half but pulled away in the second half for the win.
BYU–Hawaii raced out to a 15-point lead midway through the opening period, only to see Hawaii Select battle back to within two before the Seasiders scored the final basket of the half to provide the four-point margin. But after Leon Ballard cut the lead to two to open the second half, the Seasiders scored eight straight points, fueled by five points from junior transfer J.R. Buensuceso, and BYU–Hawaii was never seriously threatened from that point on.
Junior transfer Garrett Sandberg came off the bench to score 16 points and grab eight rebounds to lead the Seasiders in both categories. Nathan Sims scored 15 and pulled down six boards while Jet Chang and Jermaine Odjegba added 12 and 11 points respectively. Odjegba and Buensuceso each snatched five rebounds and Buensuceso notched nine points, three assists, and three steals. Marques Whippy also had three assists and three steals to go with seven points and A.J. Reilly and Trenson Akana each dished out three assists as well.
Ballard led Hawaii Select with 21 points and nine rebounds and Leandro Maruoka added 12 points and five rebounds.
BYU–Hawaii will open the regular season on November 18th in Laie against defending NCAA II champion Winona State at 7:30 pm. The same two teams will meet two nights later at the same time and place for a second game.
