Seasiders Win Big in Exhibition

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team opened the exhibition season today with a 121-58 win over the New Zealand Saints in the American Money Group Asia-Pacific Basketball Classic in Laie.  Fourteen different players scored for the Seasiders as they shot a blistering 70 percent from the field for the game.

BYU–Hawaii opened up a 66-28 halftime lead and cruised to the easy win with five players scoring in double figures.  BYU–Hawaii also held a 52-16 advantage in rebounds over the much-shorter Saints, whose tallest player was 6-4.

Senior Nathan Sims scored 21 points to lead all scorers.  Sims shot 8-9 from the field and added a game-high seven rebounds in just 17 minutes of play for the Seasiders.  Freshman Tsung-Hsien (Jet) Chang tallied 18 points, three assists, and three rebounds in just 13 minutes of play, and reigning Pacific West Conference Player of the Year scored 11 points in just six minutes of action to start the game.  Jermaine Odjegba hit for 16 points, handed out five assists, and blocked a pair of shots while Nkosi Stewart came off the bench for 11 points.  Nick Holladay struck for eight points and six rebounds and Marques Whippy ended the night with six rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Also getting into the scoring column for the Seasiders were Trenson Akana, J.R. Buensuceso, and Garrett Sandberg with seven points each, A.J. Reilly with five, Jeff Stricklin and T.J. Fullmer with three each, and Whippy and Whitney McCloud with two apiece.

Nick Mills led New Zealand with 16 points while Jordan Mills had 15 and Duane Bailey 13.

BYU–Hawaii will face Hawaii Select on Tuesday in Laie at 7:30 pm HST.
